About Pioneer SDA Church

The official university church of Babcock University — serving the campus and Ilisan-Remo community since our founding.

Our Story

Who We Are

Pioneer Seventh-day Adventist Church is the official university church of Babcock University, located in Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria. As a campus church, we serve a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, families, and residents of the surrounding Ilisan-Remo community.

We are the Headquarters Church of Babcock District within the Ogun Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Our district oversees multiple churches and 33 campus worship centres spread across Babcock University's halls of residence — making us one of the most vibrant and expansive Adventist worship communities in West Africa, with over 15,000 worshippers gathering weekly.

We are part of the global Seventh-day Adventist Church — a worldwide Christian denomination with over 21 million members in more than 200 countries. Our faith is rooted in the Bible, and we look forward to the soon return of Jesus Christ.

Our Mission

To nurture a Christ-centered community at Babcock University that worships passionately, grows spiritually, serves compassionately, and shares the everlasting gospel with the Ilisan-Remo community and the world.

We are committed to being a house of prayer for all nations — welcoming worshippers from every tribe, tongue, and people. Whether you are a first-year student, a seasoned professor, an international visitor, or a lifelong member of the Ilisan-Remo community, you have a place here.

Our Journey

The Pioneer Story: 7 Students to 15,000 Worshippers

Tap any milestone to explore — or sit back and let the journey unfold. Pioneer SDA Church grew from a handful of students into a global worshipping community.

Professional Milestones

ACWA opened on 17 September 1959 with just 7 ministerial students, initially hosted at the home of Chief Olufemi Okulaja in Ilisan-Remo before campus construction began. Dr. Grover C. Winslow, a professor from Middle East College, was appointed the first president. This was the birth of Adventist higher education in West Africa — a missionary vision that would grow beyond anyone's imagination.

Spirit-Filled Movement

From day one, worship anchored campus life. Those 7 students gathered daily for morning devotion, Sabbath worship, and prayer bands. The seed of Pioneer SDA Church was planted in this soil — a worshipping community that would grow from a handful of ministerial students into a movement spanning the globe.

Legacy: The ACWA era (1959–1975) established the spiritual DNA that still defines Pioneer Church: Word-centred, mission-driven, Spirit-led worship.
